March Ice Fishing in Door County

Walleyes
We had a a little slower than usual Walleye action up in Door County at the end of February.  We were anticipating a great bite during the full moon phase, but ended up a little disappointed.  However, the HUGE amount of ice traffic during the last weekend of February that we had didn’t help with the bite either.  During the beginning of this first week of March, we have had a little more luck getting those Walleyes to bite.  I am seeing a lot of fish in the 6-8 lb range, but we are coming into TROPHY WALLEYE TIME!!!  Despite the warm weather, yes, we are STILL ice fishing in Door County...it is perhaps the best time to come up for your wall-hanger fish! (Guided trips available www.wackywalleye.com if you are a little nervous about ice travel this time of year)  We are still sticking to the same presentations: ¼ oz oddball jig (white and green, white and chartreuse or white and blue I have been using regularly) or a jigging rap.  I like med-large emerald shiners for minnows.  Target depths in the mid-20’ range.  Try your luck of High Cliff or Riley’s Point.

Whitefish
Had two good anglers that I fished with today (March 3rd) and we had our limits in about 50 minutes.  We keep bopping around from spot to spot and it seems that the WHITEFISH ARE EVERYWHERE!  It's a fun bite, and once you get the hang of it, there will be no stoppin ya!  The key to catching the Whities is to keep constant tension on your line when reeling them up and keep the fish from darting as you bring them up.  Reel them in as you would if you were deep sea fishing.   Pull your rod tip all the way up over your head and quickly reel back down toward the ice-keeping constant tension…repeat until you have the fish up at the hole!  I like the Swedish pimple or macho minnow vertical jigging spoon paired with Berkley Gulp wax worms.  We are fishing in 45-80 FOW.

Ice Conditions
Ice has been holding up pretty well for the warmer temps we have been having these past few days.  Its been staying cold at night-in the teens-so that helps keep our ice in tact.  There is 20” of ice for the most part in most of the areas we have been fishing.  Just be careful as usual and watch for areas where thermal pockets formed earlier in the season.

I am running a Door County Walleye/Whitefish school March 12-14…we still have some availability.  The cost is $359/person including lodging, meals, seminars, and fun fishing time on the ice in Door County!!!!!  Great camaraderie and good fishing makes for an awesome weekend!!
