Episode 18

Cold-Front on the Winnebago System

Show Date: May 4th & 5th, 2019

Location: Lake Winnebago System; Oshkosh, Wisconsin

Guide: Captain Matt Merten [920-410-2206 | https://www.badgersportsmanoutdoors.com/ ]

This week we’re in the boat with Captain Matt Merten, who knows the Winnebago System better than just about anyone.  We ended up fishing during a pretty severe cold front, so Matt put us on the river, so we could get out of the wind. We are doing a different presentation than we usually use on rivers, pulling flies.  Matt says this is a unique presentation that is very popular on the Winnebago system, but hasn’t seen it use many other places. Trolling into the current very slowly, from .3 to 1mph, which make for an easy way to catch a lot of fish.

We are so glad to be back in Hayward Wisconsin with Pete and Tex Maina, with the season now open, we are after walleyes.  We are catching them on a variety of different presentations, Pete is casting a Livingston Jerkmaster, his dad Tex is using a live minnow, and John and Blake are using Kalins plastics.  We end of having a phenomenal day, and the walleyes in northern Wisconsin have a beautiful dark color that you don’t find everywhere.

What a fun trip to Hayward! We caught a bunch of beautiful northern Wisconsin walleyes.  Great to be back in the boat with Pete and Tex! Tune in this weekend!

Episode 20

Trophy Bay Walleyes

Show Date: May 18th & 19th, 2019

Location: Sand Bay Beach Resort - Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin

Guide: Charter Captain Mark Jackson & Dale Stroschein [ 920-743-5731 | wackywalleye.com]

Wacky Walleye guide service knows how to put us on fish, and that was on full display for our trip!  Mid-May is a great time to get out on the bay, our guide Mark tells us that the water is still cold, and there are still a lot of big fish roaming around.  What we most like is that we can get them jigging, we use plastics and hair jigs.

The Bay of Green Bay has something for everyone, if you want numbers of eating fish, you can do that.  What we decided to do was target trophy fish, so the bite isn’t as fast, but the fish are big and beautiful.

We end up having an amazing trip, catching multiple “fish of a lifetime” trophy fish.

Episode 21

Big Bass on a Small Lake

Show Date: May 25th & 26th, 2019

Location; Hayward, Wisconsin

This week we are trying something a little different with Pete and Tex Maina that has the two of them recalling the early days of their guiding careers.  We’ve got 2 small row boats, Tex is guiding Blake, and Pete is guiding John. We are targeting bass, starting on the shorelines, and working out from there looking for weeds.  What we always talk about when you have a group of anglers, is that your can try a variety of different lures to see what works. In our case however, everything we tried worked!  Blake stuck with the original Kalin’s Grub, Pete castred a Livingston Lure shallow diving crankbait, and John tossed a Kalin’s Wac-O Worm.

We had a great day catching beautiful largemouth bass, and just like the walleyes in the northern part of the state, they have a gorgeous dark color to them.  The weather and the fish cooperated, which made for a great northwoods fishing trip!
